Market Pickup Reminder

Just a reminder that* tomorrow is the market pickup day. *

Also, a few other things to pass along.

1. Carrie from Petit Jean Farm called me pleading for empty milk containers. Those of you who have been buying raw milk, please bring back any of them empty containers that you have.

2. Armstead Farm is going to be short on butternut squash and sweet potatoes. They may not have any and it is all my fault. I didn’t make it clear to them that this was a market week so they didn’t adjust their quantities. Sorry:(

3. For those of you interested in the Falling Sky Grass Fed Beef, we took the beeves to the butcher today so we have more details on the size, price, and cutting options. Just email me if you’re interested and I will forward you the information.

Have a great evening and we’ll see you tomorrow.

Falling Sky Farm's 100% Grass Fed Beef

Hi All-

I mentioned in the Farm and Turkey Update that we would have some 100% grassfed/grassfinished beef available soon. Well, we are taking two fat beeves to the a local custom butcher shop on Thursday. We rotate these 18 month old Black Angus Cattle twice daily on our luscious green pastures. They get all the fresh green grass they like. The haven’t had any grain and we are confident they’ll be well marbled and tender. Being grass fed, these cattle will be higher in Omega 3’s and CLA’s, and full of flavor. For more on the benefits of grassfed beef check out eatwild.com.

We are going to be selling these beeves by the whole , half (side), or quarter (split half). We’ll work with you and the butcher to get the beef aged and cut the way you’d prefer. And we will also deliver your meat.

Whole Beef Carcass ($2.75/ pound hanging weight) . This may require up to 15 cubic feet of freezer space. The estimated meat yield will be about 450 pounds. This figure will vary considerably if you decide to go with mostly boneless cuts.

Side of Beef (3.00/ pound hanging weight). This may require up to 7.5 cubic feet of freezer space. The estimated meat yield will be about 225 pounds.

Split Half (3.25/ pound hanging weight). This may require up to 3 to 4 cubic feet of freezer space. The estimated meat yield will be about 115 pounds.

Let me know if your interested or have any questions.

Have a great evening,

Market Open

Hello Everyone-

Conway Locally Grown is open for ordering. It has been a while since our last market, and it is good to be back.

October was a very busy month for us both on the farm and at the market. Our farm has been loaded with chickens, turkeys, horses and cows. At our peak we had 1600 broiler chickens, 135 laying hens, 150 turkeys, 7 horses, and 4 cows. By Thanksgiving, we will be down to just the laying hens, horses, and a couple cows. On October 19th we organized the first Conway Locally Grown Dinner at Pia’s which ended up being a smashing success. With about 75 people in attendance, we filled Pia’s to the brim. The food and the energy was just amazing. There was a buzz in the room the entire night. We are looking forward to organizing more of these dinners next year. Yesterday, we hosted a Holistic Grazing Seminar with featured speaker Greg Judy. Greg talked about innovative grazing techniques that grazers can use to heal the land and produce high quality 100% grass-fed beef without the use of fossil fuel inputs. We followed up the seminar with pasture walk at our farm. October has been busy!

In other news, Michael Pollan wrote a great article in the October 12th addition of the the New York Times Magazine titled_ Farmer and Chief._ The article was his best yet at outlining how our food policy relates to energy independence, our healthcare crisis, and climate change. In this letter to the next president he outlines a set of steps that we should take to resolarize and regionalize our food system. It is a compelling piece of journalism that I highly recommend.

As for the market this week, there is still a great selection and don’t be afraid to stock up. Our eggs are so fresh that they will easily keep a month. Many of the Nuffer’s products will keep well. The Serenity Farm Bread keeps for about a week and freezes well. And of course the frozen meats and the cheeses keep well.

We are planning to run a Special Thanksgiving Market on Friday November 21st, so mark your calendars. We still have a few Turkey’s available, but the supply is dwindling. The turkeys will be delivered fresh the morning of Tuesday November 25th. So far I have the following people down for turkeys: Christy Coker, Britt Murphy, Peter Mehl, Gail Kirkland, Lynn Tanguay, and Joyce Hardin. My records show that I’m missing one person. If you ordered a turkey through Conway Locally Grown and our not on this list, please let me know and I’ll check your account.

Happy shopping and as always, let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.
