Opening Bell: Who's Your Hen?

Good evening,
You’ve probably all seen the bumper sticker, “Who’s Your Farmer?” This is intended to get us to think about the hard-working people that grow our food. Well, let’s also consider “Who’s Your Hen?” You know, those hard working ladies giving it their all to produce all those excellent eggs, day after day, week after week, and year after year. People choose their eggs based on several factors, some focusing on the hens’ diet, and others focusing on how the hens spend their days. Our Growers have tweaked their egg items to reflect on these things to help you make the best-informed food choice for your family. Here are two labels to look for in the item name: Organic *& *Pastured. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, *organic *means that the laying hens must have access to the outdoors and cannot be raised in cages. Organic egg producers cannot use antibiotics except during an infectious outbreak. Their feed must be organic and GMO-free. Only natural molting can occur within the flock; forced molting is not allowed. *Pastured *eggs are produced by hens that roam freely outdoors on a pasture where they can forage for their natural diet, which includes seeds, green plants, insects, and worms. Their diet may also be supplemented with scratch grains and laying pellets. Please read the detailed descriptions to learn more about the hens’ diet and quality of life. If you have specific questions about a product, you can find the Grower’s contact information under the OUR GROWERS tab at the top of each page.
