Opening Bell: New Farmhand! Plants, Kale, Spinach, Beef!

Good afternoon!

The CLG family is proud to announce the arrival of Winfield Fox McCannon, born on Thursday, April 13 at 9:50am. Although he is only 7lbs 6oz now, we look forward to watching him grow over the years as he develops into a first-rate farmhand at Bell Urban Farm under the watchful eyes of his parents, Kim and Zack. You’ve seen Kim volunteering at the market several times a month for over a year. Congratulations new parents!

Busy, busy, busy! So much to do in the garden this time of year to have delicious veggies all summer long! Also, since it’s going to be so warm, you might want to stock up on the last of the kale and spinach before it bolts. Just blanch them in boiling water, drain, and freeze in cottage cheese containers to have bright greens all year long. #spinach-artichoke-dip!

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!

Bring boxes if you ordered plants. This is a pickup reminder for those of you who ordered this week. Thank you for your order! You can pick up your order from 3:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. today at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at 925 Mitchell Street in Conway.

Usually our volunteers have the market ready for customers to pick up before 4pm. If you are out and about and want to know if we are ready, just text me to see: 501-339-1039.

If something comes up that you cannot personally pick up your order today, please contact someone to pick up for you.

Remember to bring your EGGSHELLS, glass jars for recycling, egg cartons, and bags for ordered items. Reduce, reuse, recycle! See you this afternoon.

You’ll find lots of wonderful plants for your garden this week. Besides tomato and pepper plants, you’ll also find pest-repelling marigolds in 4-packs for only $2. Plant them all around your garden! Asparagus is coming in good now so enjoy some grilled or sauteed, and don’t forget the chops, steaks, or burgers since you’ve got the grill fired up. :-)

With Spring Break behind us, it’s time to put your garden plan into action. Several Growers have plants already listed, with more added every week. Consider planting marigolds all around in your vegetable garden since they repel pests and attract pollinators. I pick the spent flowers, pull them apart with my fingers, and drop the pieces over my pepper plants to deter pests organically. We will have plenty of marigold plants ready in about 2 weeks or so. Lots of great items available right now. Enjoy!
