Opening Bell: Jelly, Lettuce, Apples, Purple Hull Peas!


Good afternoon!
Does your honey ever get crystallized in the jar? If it does, you can easily get it back to normal by sitting the jar in a hot water bath for about 10 minutes. Honey is naturally antibiotic and antiviral. The only way that natural air-born yeasts can become active is for water to be added to honey. As long as the moisture content remains under 18% nothing will grow in honey. Natural, raw, honey varies from 14% to 18% moisture content. Raw honey also contains enzymes that help in its digestion. Honey was found in one of the Egyptian pyramids, estimated at several thousand years old, and it was still good! Awesome bees!!! See you on Friday!

Total Crop Loss at Crimmins Family Farm


This morning I got a call from Chuck Crimmins detailing the devastation on their farm from the recent flooding. All of the hard work they put in to produce so much organic food for us was washed away in the flood. Please take a minute to read his note below.

Hello everyone. We must apologize that we will not be able to deliver your order this week, nor in the foreseeable future, and have unlisted all of our items from CLG. The recent rains put our entire field 3’ to 8’ underwater. It came up much quicker than anyone anticipated and we were very lucky to get our tractor and implements out of harms way. Unfortunately, we could not save our beehives and lost them in the floods. Although they were full of honey for overwintering and weighed ~250 lbs each, the floodwaters moved them off their blocks and carried them away. When the water receded, we found them 1/4 mile away, resting against a barbed wire fence. The force of moving water is not something to be taken lightly. Unfortunately, we could not pick up and move the vegetables. I guess it could be considered ‘funny’ but we found some of our uprooted turnips and beets in neighboring fields. Once again, the force of water!

We thank all of you for your orders, both this week and in the past, and your support of our small family farm. It really does help us out and we enjoy growing for you. Our next step is to now call a close to the old season and begin a new one.

We hope everyone is starting the new year off well and ‘dry’
