Luffa has been one of the coolest plants that we have ever grown! You can literally grow your own bath or kitchen sponge. To harvest sponges, let luffa grow large, and they will start to feel lighter and hollow (aka spongy). We have found that luffa are best harvested when fully yellow. If green, they can be difficult to peel. Harvesting when brown is also fine, but this will have some discoloration. Luffa can also be eaten similar as zucchini when very small and tender. We harvested around 20 luffa from just two plants last year! This is a plant you won't regret growing in your garden this year. Plus, saving seeds for next year is so easy--just shake them out and let them dry! While we can't guarantee a specific germination rate, our at-home germination test was 100% using 10 seeds.
